Timberland operates three distribution centers that get our products to our retail stores, our consumers and our wholesale customers as quickly and economically as possible. Our US distribution centers in Ontario, CA and Danville, KY, operate as efficiently as possible using renewable energy to power 50-100% of their energy needs.
When it was time to relocate our European distribution center to Almelo, Holland, we ensured the building was designed and built with the environment in mind by achieving Europe’s BREEAM® (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification.
To earn a BREEAM® certificate, a building must meet established benchmarks for specification, design, construction and use, as they relate to such topics as energy and water use, the health of the internal environment, pollution, transportation, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.
The facility features a number of environmentally conscious attributes, including underground storage tanks that collect rainwater for flushing toilets and motion-detector lights to help reduce energy consumption. A new, state-of-the-art, automated packing system also offers greater efficiency—and less noise.
We chose to locate the facility in Almelo which has easy access to the ports of Rotterdam. As such, our products can get to the European markets within two days travel time which is both convenient and cost saving for our customers and helps to reduce our trucking emissions.
Outside, there’s extensive green landscaping—including more than 100 birdhouses that provide a home for swallows and bats. The facility also gets 100% of its energy from wind power.
