Lighten Up

3 Looks For Spring

A change in season calls for a change in style - not only what you wear but how you wear it. For spring, it’s all about lightening up and keeping things adaptable so you’re as comfy conquering your (potentially stressful) bike commute as sipping steaming hot coffee from your favorite coffee shop.

The best way to put the spring in your style? Lose the bulk and layer up instead with some looks from our Portside Blue Collection, inspired by spring sun, sea and salty air.

Soft muted tones, loose breathable fabrics and of course, shades of blue everywhere…

How to Layer Like a Pro

Spring is the season for fresh, functional style - relaxed but tailored for a downbeat but put together look. A blazer is the embodiment of this aesthetic - and we love the Smarts Mountain Coverall. The rich indigo wash carries an air of sophistication perfect for lunchtime meetings and evening outings, while the vintage finish and detailing keeps it casual enough to be a throw-on-and-go staple. Find it in stores, or check out something similar online here.

As for what to wear underneath? When choosing a button-down, go for a print. We like the Parker River Slim-Fit Double-Layer Shirt with its ocean-inspired color and feel and a neutral print that isn’t too distracting. Next, break up the blues with our Squam Lake 5 Pocket Pants in Sand. A jean/chino hybrid (should we start calling them “jeanos”? “cheans”?), they exude ‘classic spring look’ and for good reason. We love to add an extra turn-up or two on the cuffs for tailoring and to accentuate that nautical feel, especially when matched with the right footwear.

Speaking of which… check out the Amherst Canvas Chukka in Navy, our quintessential warm-weather shoe. Crafted from soft-washed canvas and our trademark Timberland leather with a hardwearing rubber outsole and SensorFlex™ comfort system, the Amherst is built to carry you in comfort wherever the day takes you.

Style & Comfort

No closet is complete without a simple, understated sweatshirt - throw it in your day bag, wrap it round your waist and have it on hand whenever the sun dips or the clouds form. For a punch of color to liven up your look, choose the Exeter River Saltscrub Crew. Wear it alone to ward off the chill on your morning run or pair it with a lightweight shirt underneath to polish the whole “I’m wearing a sweatshirt” thing. Weekends on the water never looked so good.

When the spring sun is shining, it’s time to break out the bare legs. In most cases, this means… SHORTS (pause for reaction). Drop the socks and mix it up with some oxford sneakers (we like the Newport Bay or Amherst) to stay cool whether you’re breaking sweat or taking it easy.

Varsity Blues

Embrace the outdoors but dress ready for changing weather with a bomber jacket,  a spring staple for every man’s wardrobe.

Sharp enough to wear with clients, a navy bomber jacket also brings an edge to weekend get togethers with its workwear-inspired detailing. Throw it over a sweatshirt and chinos, styled just how you like it.

We’re unabashed fans of the Sargent Lake Stretch Chinos in Vintage Indigo. Slim cut and stylish detailing keep them the right side of stylish but the light blue wash sits them firmly on easy street. A great alternative to everyday jeans. Lose the laces and keep the look clean with a pair of slip-ons for hassle-free style.

Three looks that bring spring home and leave those winter blues firmly in the rear view mirror.

And now for the ladies, blue takes on a whole new look in our newest spring collection for women.
