Reinventing California: Timberland X Publish

East Coast meets West Coast

Publish Brand and Timberland collaborated on wheat and black boots – get the story on the partnership and browse the collection.

This season, New England craftsmanship and heritage meets West Coast style in our latest collaboration with Publish Brand.

California’s Publish Brand  – known for their signature feather logo and must-have street joggers – has teamed up with Timberland to create this limited release collection of Chelsea boots and oxfords.

Available in black and wheat, the collaboration is based off of the concept of “Reinventing California.”

We sat down with Alex James, the Brand Director for Publish, to tell us about the inspiration behind the collection and how he’d personally style the boots.

How did the concept of “Reinventing California” come to be?

People associate boots with colder climates yet everyone in California still wears Timberlands. These classic styles have no boundaries.

We wanted to put our design aesthetic on two models that we love, the Chelsea and the Oxford, and educate the masses on relaxed California lifestyle.

Through styling, photography, and awareness, Publish and Timberland are “Reinventing California” style one day at time.

Why did Publish decide to collaborate with Timberland?

We have all been huge fans of Timberland for quite sometime – we use a lot of different Timberland boots in our styling. The overall vibe matches ours seamlessly. When the opportunity arose to collaborate, we didn’t hesitate and the rest is now history.

What was the creative process and thinking behind the design of the Chelsea boots?

Right now, Chelsea boots are highly desirable in many different sects of fashion around the world. I personally don’t like the heel on most Chelsea’s out today.

I wanted to take the formal Chelsea and make it more rugged. This updated style was intended for the everyday man. The thick Vibram sole was the clear choice!

The color palette was easy, clean black and the classic wheat (which Timberland is known for).

And, what was the thinking behind the design of the oxfords in this collaboration?

I grew up wearing the 6-inch boot. I always wanted to wear that same exact boot but cut to the ankle for the summer. Back then it wasn’t an option and now, with this collaboration, it’s possible.

I also added a neoprene ankle cuff for comfort while wearing no-show socks. These boots are a true representation of California style.

At your heart, are you a New York guy or a California guy and why?

I am a Brooklyn by way of Jersey guy who moved to Los Angeles and fell in love. My style is a mash up of both coasts. I used to hide my accent but now I‘m comfortable in Cali and just run with it.

Fill in the blank:

When I think of Timberland, I think of: rugged raw quality.
