It’s happening soon. The day that fills shoppers with adrenaline, excitement and the sense of infinite possibility. The biggest shopping the day of the year – Black Friday. Shoppers spent a whopping $50.9 billion last year over the Black Friday weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.
In other words, Black Friday is a big deal. You’re going to need to bring your A game. We put together a quick primer on what to wear and bring to survive this frenzied, fun day. Lace up your boots and let the games begin.
Coffee is your best friend, especially if you’re staying up all night or getting to the stores extra early. You’re going to need the caffeine boost so whether you pick up an espresso on the way or bring a thermos full of home-brewed coffee, this is a must. Pack healthy, energizing snacks like trail mix and protein bars (shopping is akin to a sport, after all). Also, having snacks will give you the extra boost when competing with other shoppers. A gentle boost, but a boost nonetheless.
You’ve got to have something to carry all of those credit cards (or cash) in. Our Black River Large Bi-Fold Leather Wallet is a solid choice to pick up. And our Henniker Convertible Leather Bag in black and burnished metallic leather is an excellent handbag to tote on your shopping expedition. It can be worn as a long or short shoulder bag and even a backpack when your arms get tired from holding shopping bags.
It goes without saying that comfort is key. If the temperature dips or snow or rain decide to make an appearance, a toasty coat and boots are crucial. For guys, the Pico Peak Waterproof Down Parka for its rugged yet street-ready look that will keep you warm if you’re hunkered down for the night. The Hyvent water-repellent coating, goose-filled down body and hood with detachable faux fur trim will provide warmth and protection from the cold.
Throw on our Timberland Authentics 8-Inch Rugged Handsewn Boots because they’re not only downright dapper, they mean business with their impressive height and handstitched premium leather.
For women, we recommend our Mt. Moriah Classic Down Jacket because it’s incredibly warm (thanks to the duck down-filled insulation), yet has a sleek, slim silhouette. Pull on our 6-Inch Premium Pull-On Waterproof Boots for a polished finish with stretchy skinnies that are comfy during the shopping spree. We love their moto styling combined with waterproof, seam-sealed construction and anti-fatigue footbed technology for all-day browsing.
Don’t let your fingers get cold and wear the Maiden Beach Knit Touchscreen Gloves or Men’s Wool Touchscreen Gloves for texting, online browsing and app surfing for the best deals or passing time in the checkout line.
Also, download a few podcasts to pass the time. Stock up on your favorites – we like The Moth, where you can listen to people tell true stories or NPR’s This American Life for a snapshot of what’s going on around the country.
If you’re trying to get to several places on the day and coordinating with friends, try the app Waze. It uses crowd-sourced maps with travel data from locals to provide real-time information on the quickest driving routes. If you’re meeting friends and family, add them to see when they'll arrive.
And if you’re not into the shopping frenzy? Explore new areas by searching for #ModernTrail on Foursquare to find cool, hidden places in your city. Or break a sweat and work off that Thanksgiving feast by hitting up a spin class, yoga studio or venture out for an autumn hike. Maybe even enrich your mind a little and take a trip to a museum to combat that post-turkey slump.
And if you can’t be bothered to leave the house, enjoy those leftovers, escape the drama, and hunker down for a Netflix binge-fest of a new TV show like Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, a show about modern dating or female superhero girl show Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We won’t judge you.
But if you do brave Black Friday, may the odds be ever in your favor.
For the rest of the season, we’ve got you covered. Check out the Holiday Collection.
