The Student Conservation Association (SCA) and Timberland have teamed up to green up the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics (MCSM) in East Harlem. MCSM is a Title I public school whose mission is to provide a challenging academic program that enables students to compete for admission to selective, four-year, post-secondary institutions. Ranked in the top 3% of high schools in the U.S.1, MCSM has 1,600 students, 94% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Projects include restoration of the school’s rooftop greenhouse, installation of a living roof, construction of an outdoor classroom and gathering space, tree planting, and overall enhancements to the school grounds and surrounding neighborhood.
