Fall’s Best New Neutral to Work Into Your Wardrobe

Sure, you’ve heard of indigo – that dark and moody hue that’s prime for a great pair of jeans or blazer. But the origin of the name actually refers to indigo dye – a natural dye that was extracted from plants. First used in India, it’s one of the oldest dyes used for textiles.

Indigo pieces are not only a great wardrobe staple but they’re effortlessly cool and can work with any look. This fall, go beyond your next pair of jeans and add some indigo-inspired looks to your closet. After all, it’s this season’s new neutral.

Take our Taunton River Slim Fit Solid Polo Shirt in the Vintage or Rinse wash. The slightly weathered look adds an offhand, lived-in element that makes this shirt feels like it’s been in your closet forever—in a good way—and the slim fit ensures it’ll look great every time you wear it. Pair it with slim-fitting chinos and slick sneakers or a zip-up hoodie and joggers for an off-duty look.

Check out the Taunton River Slim Fit Cargo Polo Shirt in the Rinse or Vintage wash. The outerwear-inspired pockets mean that you can pair this up with a lightweight jacket, jeans and casual oxfords and feel like you’ve mastered the style game (even if you’re just wearing jeans and a tee).

As temps dip lower (and nights get chillier) our Allendale River Slim Fit Indigo Plaid Shirt in Black Iris will be a go-to for a pulled-together feel. It’s great on its own with a pair of dark jeans. Or pair it with an anorak, jeans and  chukkas for an outdoorsy yet city feel (and we love the jean-inspired detail around the inner collar).

A sweatshirt that’s dressy enough to wear out at night? Check. The Hall’s Stream Shawl Collar Sweatshirt (pictured, left) goes from couch to café in a beat. Dressy enough to wear with a button-up underneath and slim chinos or with a T-shirt and distressed denim for weekends, it’s easily one of our more versatile options.

Step up your hoodie game and pick up this indigo-dyed cotton Wait’s River Striped Full-Zip Hoodie (pictured, right). Super soft and comfortable but definitely stylish enough for weekend or after-work outings, you’ll look relaxed but on point.

Of course we’ve gotta talk denim. A style we highly recommend is our Thompson Lake Slim Fit Selvage Denim Pant. In two different styles and five different washes, these indigo-dyed jeans are crafted out of our premium Thompson Lake denim in a tightly woven selvage fabric. Whether you like a pair with a slightly lived-in look or a pair with ergonomic knee detail, this slim-fitting style will work with a T-shirt, blazer and sneakers. Or, roll ’em up and pair with a button-up, leather jacket and chukka boots for an edgier take.

Investing in various indigo staples means that you never have to worry whether your autumn items will clash, be too loud, or mismatch. Go for the indigo.
