We Believe That Human Activity Is Changing Our Climate

We Intend To Do Something About It
Record high and low temperatures. Record rainfall and severe storms worldwide. As global temperatures warm due to climate change, the number of extreme weather events may increase. We’ve all been part of the cause. We can all be part of the solution.

At Timberland we are taking action by…

Reducing our emissions to achieve carbon neutrality Reducing our emissions to achieve carbon neutrality for Timberland owned and operated facilities and employee travel
We have a five-step plan:
1. Verify our greenhouse gas inventory by a third party
2. Reduce energy demand through improved efficiencies
3. Purchase whatever clean, renewable energy we can
4. Generate our own renewable energy on-site when we can’t purchase clean energy
5. Purchase renewable energy credits to offset emissions and help develop renewable energy projects

We hope that the combination of these five actions will help us achieve our ultimate goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2010.
Investing in renewable energy Investing in renewable energy
A 400kW solar power system provides approximately 60% of the power our Ontario, CA distribution center needs to operate. Our distribution center in Enscede, Holland uses 100% renewable energy. And our corporate headquarters and Dominican Republic factories have solar and wind power installations. We’re constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment by using cleaner energy.
Using recycled paper for our shoe boxes Conserving forest resources
Last year, we converted all of our footwear packaging to 100% post-consumer recycled boxes and soy inks. A few shoe boxes aren’t going to change the world. But it’s a step in the right direction.
Planting trees to preserve the outdoors Planting trees to preserve the outdoors
Since 2001, we’ve planted about 300,000 trees around the world. We hope our efforts not only improve air quality, but help preserve the outdoors we love.
Making more products from responsible materials Making more products from responsible materials
In more and more of the products we make, we use reduced impact manufacturing processes, as well as recycled and renewable materials, to minimize our environmental impact. The list is growing every season, and includes: organic cotton, linen and hemp; recycled denim and shoe laces; and Vibram® EcoStep® soles made of 30% recycled rubber.
