what good is a tree? what can we do together? what else are we doing?

Earth Day 2007 and Every Day
When the outdoors is at stake, we take it personally. That's why we're focused on lowering our environmental footprint to help reduce global warming. We believe planting a tree is a great start.

What Good Is A Tree?
Gases like carbon dioxide create the greenhouse effect—a natural phenomenon that keeps the earth at a livable temperature. But when we burn fossil fuels, we add too much carbon dioxide to the air, magnifying the greenhouse effect and causing the Earth's temperatures to rise to not-so-healthy and potentially dangerous levels.

However, trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while putting back more of the good stuff, like oxygen. So the more trees there are, and the less we depend on fossil fuels, the better we'll be at reducing (and reversing) global warming.

What Can We Do Together?
Here are some ways that we can work together to make a difference:

PLANT ONE ON US
Spend $150 or more and we'll plant a tree for you.
Begin shopping at a store near you, or shop online at  timberland.com.

JOIN US FOR AN EARTH DAY PROJECT
Please join us at an event near you during the week of April 16-22.

GO ORGANIC
Purchase our 2007 organic cotton Earth Day T-shirt. Organic cotton produces roughly 30% less carbon dioxide than conventional cotton by eliminating large quantities of chemicals.

JOIN THE STOP GLOBAL WARMING VIRTUAL MARCH
The March is a national movement uniting citizens to raise awareness and create solutions to combat climate change. To find out more, visit stopglobalwarming.org.

What Else Are We Doing?
Here are just a few other things we're doing to help make it better:

More clean energy. We use renewable energy, like solar power and wind, to reduce global warming impact.

Less waste. Our footwear packaging is made with 100% recycled materials, and we're increasing the use of recycled and renewable materials in our products to reduce landfill.

Less pesticides & chemicals. Each year we try to increase our use of organic materials in the apparel we design and use water-based solvents in our footwear.

More trees. Our Plant One On Us program is a helping hand for nature in the battle against global warming.
