Stratham, NH, June 4, 2008 – The Timberland Company announced today that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for Timberland’s Peabody, MA retail store location and LEED Silver certification for Timberland’s Salem, NH retail store location. This well-regarded certification distinguishes Timberland as one of 40 companies to participate in the LEED for Retail: Commercial Interiors Pilot Program and the first company to achieve LEED certification specifically for mall-based retail stores.
“Timberland is committed to reducing global warming and preserving the outdoor environment through the use of more renewable energy, more recycled and reusable materials, less waste, and less chemicals,” said Jeff Swartz, President and CEO of Timberland. “Building our stores to LEED specification, in a high-performance and sustainable manner is another step in the right direction.”
This certification reflects Timberland’s commitment to sustainability and to becoming a carbon neutral company by cutting back emissions, using renewable energy sources and supporting environmental projects that help alleviate the company’s remaining carbon pollution. Including Timberland’s LEED certifications, Massachusetts now has 70 LEED certified projects, and New Hampshire has 12 LEED certified projects. Timberland’s Peabody and Salem retail locations are the first LEED certified mall-based retail stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
To achieve their Gold and Silver certifications, the Peabody store in the North Shore Mall and the Salem store in the Rockingham Mall, were constructed to meet LEED criteria, including:
Using 100% reclaimed lumber
Repurposing 100% of stockroom shelving
Reducing water usage by 50% with specialized water technologies
Ensuring that 90% of equipment and appliances installed are Energy Star eligible resulting in optimized energy performance
Recycling construction waste
o 90% of construction waste recycled at Peabody, MA store
o 50% of construction waste recycled at Salem, NH store
“Retailers have much to gain by building green – from increased sales to reduced operating costs,” said Justin Doak, sector manager of LEED for Retail. “Timberland should be congratulated for receiving Gold and Silver certifications and for its commitment to the health, comfort and well-being of its customers and employees.”
The LEED for Retail: Commercial Interiors Pilot is a program developed by the USGBC specifically for retailers, establishing a rating system that addresses the unique nature of the retail environment and the different types of spaces that retailers need for their specific product lines. Gold and Silver certifications of Timberland’s two retail stores was based on ratings in 6 key areas: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources selection, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. Timberland has committed to building future stores to LEED specification.
